An Adventurous Trail

At any time of year, by prior arrangement, see info@portmoneum.cz

The Travelogue or ramblers journal about the experiences of two pilgrim gentlemen and one pilgrim lady’ by Josef Váchal from 1921, is to its readers an inviting experience to follow. What route did they take? How long did they take to cover it? Could it be done today? We asked ourselves the same questions, and pieced together some information about the places mentioned by Váchal, as well as tracing the route, which we had to modify in places. We arranged for overnight accommodation in the places where they had stayed, and then set off ourselves. Like them, three of us.

We have thus prepared a trail in the footsteps of Josef Váchal, Anna Macková and Josef Portman, which begins and ends in the Portmoneum; to suit Váchalologists, experienced travellers and other adventuresome folk. The route will take you, among other places, to Jimramov, Nové Město na Moravě, Žďár nad Sázavou, Hlinsko and Vysoké Mýto. You’ll be covering almost 140 kilometres on foot in four days, but don’t worry, that includes taking the train three times (though we don’t count those distances in the 140). We will advise you with all you need to know for the trip and provide a Pilgrimage Passport, into which you will collect way-point stamps and make your own trip notes. We’ll advise about accommodation and potential pitfalls, because this is not just some romantic stroll. You do, however, need to plan and make your own arrangements. It is definitely a good idea to prepare in advance and pick up your instructions a day early so you can leave on time in the morning. Participants can plan their own trips for the days that suit them, for this is not any kind of mass march.

Your reward will be unforgettable experiences, meetings and a place of honour in our Book of Pilgrims, where your names will be added and inscribed. We welcome all adventurers!
